How to Spot Fake Disney Pins (Scrappers) Before You Sell

If you've collected or inherited Disney pins, odds are a few counterfeits — "scrappers" or fakes — are mixed in. They're common enough that knowing the tells protects you whether you're buying, trading, or selling.

What "scrapper" means

A scrapper is an unauthorized pin struck from genuine molds but produced outside official channels. Other fakes are outright copies. Either way, they aren't authentic and carry little value, even when they look convincing.

Common tells (no single one is proof)

  • Back stamp: genuine pins usually have a crisp official back stamp and waffle/textured backing. Blurry, shallow, or missing stamps are a red flag.
  • Color & enamel: off shades, bleeding between colors, or uneven fill suggest a fake.
  • Detail & sharpness: soft, mushy detail and rounded edges point to a copied mold.
  • Weight & feel: fakes often feel lighter or "cheaper" than genuine metal pins.
  • Pin backs & posts: mismatched or low-quality backs can be a clue.
  • The deal itself: a "rare LE" sold dirt cheap in bulk is a classic scrapper signal.

No single tell is definitive — collectors weigh several together. Reference photos of known-genuine versions of the same pin help enormously.
