  • Original production cels: hand-inked/painted acetate actually used (or made) in production. Highest value.
  • Production drawings & backgrounds: original art from the animation process — also highly valued.
  • Limited editions & sericels: screen-printed editions published later. Real collectibles, but worth less than originals.

Mixing these up is the most common mistake sellers make. If you're unsure, photos of the front, back, and any certificates or studio seals usually settle it.

What drives value

The character and scene (key poses from beloved films lead), authenticity and provenance, edition size for published pieces, and condition — paint cracking, fading, and tape damage all reduce value. Certificates and original studio seals help.

Selling safely

Cels are fragile and, at the top end, valuable — so packing and insured shipping matter.
